A Malaysian Fintech Trails on AI Mention Coverage and Ranking, Yet Leads Share of Voice

What if the competitor named in more AI responses, with a better average ranking, is not the one winning the conversation?

That was the question behind this fintech brand's numbers. Its nearest tracked competitor was named in 809 of 1,200 AI responses with an average rank of #2.2. The brand was named in 752 responses with an average rank of #3.1. On those two measures it was behind. On share of voice it was ahead, 13.20% against 12.45%.

Fintech buyers compare, shortlist, then ask someone whether the shortlist holds up. More and more, that someone is ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI experiences, before a human ever takes a call. This brand measured where it stood in that conversation instead of assuming.

How to read these metrics. Mention coverage is the share of tracked AI responses that name the brand at least once. Share of voice is the brand's share of all brand mentions inside those responses, aggregated across responses. They are separate measures and neither is calculated from the other.

Why Share of Voice Changed the Reading

Mention coverage shows how often a brand appears in AI responses at all. Ranking shows where it stands when it does appear. Share of voice shows how much of the brand discussion inside each response belongs to it, compared with the other brands named alongside it.

Judged on mention coverage and ranking alone, this brand sat behind its nearest rival on both. Share of voice showed that it held more of the AI conversation than any single competitor. A brand can appear in fewer responses and still take a larger part of the discussion in the responses where it does appear. The prompt-level data supports this. The brand was winning specific, high-intent prompts outright, and the lead did not depend on how the aggregate was calculated.

What We Did (Strategy Breakdown)

Prompt Mapping

  • Tracked the real comparisons and evaluations prospects run when researching a financial product, in place of a keyword list.

Entity and Topical Signals

  • Made it clearer to AI systems what the brand does, what it is expert in, and where it belongs in the category.

Content Built for Extraction

  • Structured direct answers and supporting detail so AI engines could lift and cite them with confidence.

Competitor Gaps as a Priority List

  • Every prompt where a rival was mentioned or cited more often became the next optimisation target.

Full Competitive Measurement

  • Tracked mentions, citations, ranking, share of voice and sentiment together against five named competitors, since any one of those numbers alone can mislead.

AI Referral Traffic (GA4, 1 July to 27 August 2026 vs the previous two months)

  • ChatGPT users: 3 to 34 (+1,033%)
  • ChatGPT new users: 1 to 32 (+3,100%)
  • ChatGPT events: 164 to 764 (+365.85%)
  • Gemini users: 1 to 7. Gemini events: 5 to 61.

Read these with care. The starting base was very small, which inflates the percentages. Average engagement time per active ChatGPT user fell 41.43%, from 9 minutes 28 seconds to 5 minutes 33 seconds. Engaged sessions per active user fell 58.53%, from 3.33 to 1.38. More people are arriving, and on average each does less once there. This is worth watching as the base grows.

The Takeaway

A brand that tracks only mention coverage and ranking can misread its real share of the conversation, and never find out. Tracking mention coverage, citations, ranking, share of voice and sentiment together, against named competitors, shows which prompts the brand wins, which it loses, and where to work next.

By tracking AI visibility with tools such as Zicy, brands can see how much of the AI conversation they hold compared with the competitors buyers are weighing them against.
