One eCommerce Brand Is Now Named in More AI Answers Than Its Five Tracked Competitors Together

One eCommerce brand was named in 2,795 AI answers. Its five tracked competitors were named in 2,228 answers between them.

Across 3,381 tracked AI answers over seven weeks, this brand appeared in more answers than its five closest rivals did between them. A growing share of buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to recommend, compare or shortlist products before they reach a website. The brand that gets named takes the shortlist seat, and the brand that gets cited gets the click that follows.

Results Snapshot (Measured via Zicy)

How to read these metrics. Mention coverage is the share of tracked AI answers that name the brand at least once. Share of voice is the brand's share of all brand mentions inside those answers, aggregated across answers. They are separate measures and neither is calculated from the other. The 3.38% share of voice shown for the nearest competitor in the table reflects how often it is mentioned relative to every brand named, and is not comparable to its answer count.

Platform Coverage

  • Google AI: 87.7%
  • Gemini: 87.7%
  • AI Overviews: 87.6%
  • Perplexity: 83.6%

Competitive AI Performance

  • Brand: named in 2,795 of 3,381 answers.
  • All five tracked competitors, summed: 2,228 answers. An answer that names two rivals counts once for each.
  • The nearest competitor was named in 694 answers with a sentiment score of 73/100, positive but well below the brand's 86. The next four rivals were named in between 363 and 407 answers each.

Competitive AI Performance table for an eCommerce brand against five tracked competitors, showing 2,795 mentions and 54.15% share of voice, with competitor names redacted

Trend

  • Share of voice rose from 38.5% to 54.1% over the period while average ranking held steady around #1.3.
  • Weekly mention coverage moved more from week to week. Share of voice held its line while coverage swung, which is the case for tracking both measures together.

Prompt-Level Visibility

  • Platform coverage held at 4 or 5 out of 5 across the tracked prompts, so the result did not rest on one runaway query.

What We Did (Strategy Breakdown)

Prompt-Level Mapping

  • Tracked each high-intent product discovery prompt a real buyer would type, one by one, in place of guessing from a keyword list.

Content Rebuilt for Extraction

  • Restructured product and category pages so AI systems could lift a clear, attributable answer straight from the page.

Weak Clusters Prioritised

  • Reinforced prompts where the brand already showed authority and flagged thin prompts for the next round.

Competitor Benchmarking on the Same Prompts

  • Tracked mentions, citations, ranking and share of voice against the same five rivals, on the same prompts, in place of an industry average.

AI Referral Traffic (GA4, year to date vs the same period last year)

This uses a different reporting window from the visibility figures above, so read it as directional.

  • ChatGPT: 279 sessions, 2,084 events
  • Gemini: 10 sessions, 183 events
  • Perplexity: 3 sessions
  • Same period last year: zero sessions from each of these platforms.

GA4 table of AI referral sessions from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, 1 January to 18 August 2026 against the same dates in 2025

Read these with care. ChatGPT sent the most volume (279 sessions against a combined 13 from Gemini and Perplexity), but had the weakest engagement rate of the three at 37.63%. Perplexity converted every session it sent and Gemini held 60%. Both samples are small, so no platform can be named a winner yet. The early pattern is that the channel with the most mentions is not necessarily the one with the best engagement.

The Takeaway

Coverage and conversion are separate jobs. Mention coverage shows how often a brand is named, and share of voice shows how much of the brand discussion in those answers it holds. GA4 shows whether the people arriving from that conversation engage once they land. A brand needs both numbers, from the same window, to decide which platform deserves the next round of optimisation.
